Safe Winter Driving Tips to Avoid an Auto Accident
With heavy snow comes a messy road. Unfortunately, plows and road salt aren’t always enough to make roads safe to drive on. While you should avoid driving in heavy snow if possible, sometimes you don’t have a choice. The last thing you want is that trip to result in an auto accident, and to deal with insurance claims around the holidays.
Below are some safe winter driving tips to help avoid having an auto accident in inclement weather. While you can’t control the way others drive in bad weather, you can help protect yourself and others by practicing these tips.
Optimal visibility
Heavy snow may make it difficult to see the road ahead of you. However, you have a much better chance of maintaining optimal visibility if you take the proper steps. Before driving, make sure all windows, headlights, and mirrors are clear of snow and ice. Use your headlights while driving in snow, and keep your window defrosters on to help fight additional snow buildup. Many auto accidents are the result of poor visibility.
No cruise control
Unfortunately, cruise control does not operate well with slippery road conditions, and can cause an auto accident. This goes for snow AND freezing, wet conditions, as black ice is also an issue for cruise control. Without cruise control, you’re forced to focus more on the road conditions and your control of the car.
Be mindful of brakes
If your car does not have anti-lock brakes, it will behave differently when braking than cars with anti-lock brakes. Keep this in mind with slippery, hazardous road conditions—commonly responsible for causing an auto accident. Leave plenty of room between your car and the car in front of you to allow for sliding that may occur when hitting your brakes on icy roads.
