Police Officers in Maryland File 169 Workers’ Compensation Claims
The protests and riots that occured in April were in response to the death of Freddie Gray, a young man who died while in police custody. While many protestors kept their demonstrations peaceful, there were others who became involved in rioting and, subsequently, had confrontations with police officers. The workers’ compensation claims that the Maryland police officers have filed are reportedly largely due to injuries they sustained during these altercations or due to falling on the job. Officials representing the Baltimore City Police Department reported that 113 individual police officers sustained some type of injury during this period of unrest and that some of these officers have not yet been capable of returning to work due to these injuries.
How Is Baltimore City Compensating Its Police Officers?
To provide proper compensation to injured police officers, Baltimore City will be paying an estimated $1.7 million in workers’ compensation; the money will come from the city’s “rainy day fund.” The city will also be pursuing a reimbursement for a large percentage- up to 75 percent- of the total costs associated with the rioting from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
