Increase in Maryland Auto Accident Deaths a Scary Trend
In 2015, Maryland experienced approximately 520 auto accident deaths. This is an increase of over 17 percent from the previous year. It is a trend occurring all over the US, and Deborah A.P. Hermans of the National Safety Council warns that “we lose 100 people every day on our nation’s roadways, and every single one of these deaths is preventable.”
The primary causes of auto accidents
There are many contributing factors to auto accidents, but the cause of the majority of accidents are within a few different categories. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Crash Causation Survey for 2015 shows that 41 percent of accidents were the result of recognition error, which includes:
- Driver inattention;
- External distractions;
- Internal distractions; and,
- Inadequate surveillance.
Cell phone use while driving accounts for a large amount of internal distraction auto accidents. Even though texting and driving, as well as talking without a hands-free device, is illegal in Maryland, auto accidents caused by distracted driving are still on the rise. Drivers should avoid distractions if possible and put full attention on the road and the drivers around them.
